Solheim Cup great for women’s golf, says USA captain Juli Inkster

Team USA captain Juli Inkster had been quick to pay tribute after viewing Team Europe grab the Solheim Cup in the Americans’ hands in spectacular fashion in Gleneagles.
Following a see-saw series of 12 singles matches on the final day, it all came down to the final putt on the final green, together with Suzann Pettersen holing a birdie putt to edge outside Marina Alex 1up and clinch a 14.5-13.5 triumph for Europe.
“We watched lots of great matches on the market,” said Inkster. “But you know what, they just played a little better than us. However, as you realize that’s how it belongs in golfclubs.
“We had a great time. We had six rookies on the market who played great. I think they got a point or at least a point. And I couldn’t ask any more of these girls, the way yesterday they grinded through that weather.
“They just played a half a point . However, it’s great for women’s golf and I am really proud of my group. I’m really proud to be able to represent the USA.
“And you know what, Suzann made a excellent putt. And you understand the Solheim Cup does not come down to this putt, today, but she left it. To go ahead and roll that putt in, it is impressive. That’s why she is Suzann.”
Inkster also considers the contest in Scotland this week’s grade can help the players command new respect and the women’s game.
“I feel a whole lot of individuals underestimate women’s golf plus they don’t give it the credit we deserve,” she explained. “However, these girls are athletes. They are amazing at what they’re doing. And it irks me the way since I don’t believe these ladies must have a back seat to 28, we constantly must take a back seat.
“Not only their golf, however, the way that they handled themselves and who they are. We have to grind for what we do”
Inkster was quick to console her team after moving so close to keeping the trophy after some of these were in tears.
“We had a couple of tears. And I said it is fine. Nevertheless, the bottom line is we had and now you know what, the Europeans played good. And we are going to have a truly celebration that is excellent.
“However, the sun’s likely to appear tomorrow. This will give you fire and guys fuel for another two years to operate to be to try to get this cup back.
“Therefore, I just said, hold your heads up because you shouldn’t be disappointed. You represented that the LPGA. You represented the USA and [with] good sportsmanship and integrity.”
After causing them to victory in 2015 and 2017, inkster captained that the USA team for a third time, but she affirmed she will not be back in charge in Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio in 2021.
“I’m 2-1, I believe I will quit while I am ahead,” she said.
“I’m really happy where I am at. I’ve had the honour to do this 3 times and it has been an honor. It’s not really about the wins and losses; it is about the memories along with the camaraderie.”
